This Certificate Can Prove Your Dog Really Is a Good Boy

HAS YOUR CAT GOTTEN A LITTLE STIFF?

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It’s… just your cat flying across the room.

Cats love to run, jump, leap, spin, and move in almost every way possible. The average house cat can jump five times its own height.  Cats have strong back legs and are extremely flexible, which makes them very agile and active. Unfortunately, there are a few things that can slow these fast felines down, including injuries and old age.

When a cat has an accident, injury, is overweight, or is old, he can experience joint problems. Usually, these joint problems are caused by arthritis that has developed. Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes inflammation in the joints. Some signs your cat has arthritis or joint issues include: stiffness, limited movement, trouble getting up or laying down, trouble climbing stairs, trouble jumping, and joint swelling. Cats can also experience joint issues from infections or an autoimmune disorder.

Although dogs are commonly known to develop arthritis, your feline friend is not immune to this disease, either. In cats, joint problems, including arthritis, progress slowly, so it isn’t always easy to catch pain and problems from the beginning. If your cat is slowing down or his behavior in movement changes, don’t ignore it! It’s best to talk to your vet about any change in your cat’s mobility to make sure his joints are doing OK. Unlike humans, cats can’t express to you when they have aches and pains!

So, what can you do to help your cat feel better?  There are a few things you can do!

  • Bring your cat in for regular vet checkups. He or she will be able identify early signs and symptoms of joint issues.
  • Manage your cat’s diet to make sure they stay in a healthy weight range. Excessive weight puts pressure on the joints.
  • Use anti-inflammatory medications for the cat to manage symptoms prescribed by your vet.
  • Opt for surgery if the joints are a serious, advance case of arthritis or other joint disease.
  • Give your pet a joint supplement per your vet’s OK to do so. Ark Naturals sells Joint Rescue Super Strength Chewable joint supplements that offer support for cartilage and joint function. This product contains glucosamine, herbs, and botanicals that provide comfort to your cat with stiffness, and age-related mobility issues. Ark Naturals also sells Sea Mobility Joint Rescue, which are soft chews that contain glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin and seas cumber; these chews help with mobility and flexibility for pets with active lifestyles or age-related joint issues.

Many house cats can easily live into their teens and early 20s, so joint problems aren’t always preventable. Also, accidents happen, and knowing how to treat your cat’s joint issues is important, so they don’t get worse. If you pay attention to your cat’s mobility and bring him in for regular vet checkups, you’ll be able to catch any early symptoms of joint issues.

At Ark Naturals, we take pride in creating products that promote pet health so they can live longer, healthier and happier lives. Click here to view and purchase all our joint products for cats. For other wellness cat products, click here.

A Day for Fire Safety ... and More July-August Dates to Remember

July

15 Could your pet cause a fire in your home? (Think fireplaces, candles, stove knobs, etc.) Plus, in the event of a fire, have you taken precautions to ensure that your pet can escape? Those are the ideas behind PET FIRE SAFETY DAY. The first step to avoiding or surviving such a disaster? Read these useful tips from the American Kennel Club at ppmag.us/fireday and share with your email and social media audience.

17 While GET OUT OF THE DOGHOUSE DAY is traditionally reserved for guilty-minded husbands, and has been used for marketing purposes by jewelers and florists, we think pet store owners should get in on the action. Offer a special on luxury doghouse installation. Your pitch? A doghouse so comfortable you’ll never want to leave.

24 Conferences start today at SUPERZOO. Our advice: Walk the show first, see everything before you buy anything. Take notes on standout stuff you see and then go back for a second round to see if you still feel the same way about it.

29 Today is LASAGNA DAY. While we don’t know any actual cats who favor this classic Italian dish, it’s still not a bad day to reference Garfield for your customers. Invite local felines to visit your pet bakery to taste-test and discover their own new favorite treat — freeze-dried lamb or catnip-based wine, perhaps?

August

4 ASSISTANCE DOG DAY is an opportunity to celebrate some amazing animals in your community. Hold a parade of assistance dogs or a skills competition. Or hold a seminar that offers instructions on how to get an assistance animal for those who might need one. (Be clear, too, about cases where getting an assistance animal is not appropriate.)

6 If you have a staff member whose breath smells, in the words of Martin Amis, like a small furry animal had crawled inside his mouth and died overnight, take note of NATIONAL FRESH BREATH DAY. Run through the safe-breath drill every morning: Drink lots of water, brush and floss regularly, scrape those tongues, and see the dentist regularly. Finally, insist they chant this 10 times: Bad breath equals sales death. Bad breath equals …

8 INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY — think of it as Christmas for cats! Promote heavily. Get those gift options up on your website by the first day of the month. Similarly, mark DOG DAY on Aug. 26.

15 On CHECK THE CHIP DAY, promote appointments for your customers to get their pets chipped. And, for those who have already chipped their animals, offer free chip checking and verification.

MORE JULY-AUGUST EVENTS

July 12 is Different Colored Eyes Day. Invite customers to post images of their heterochromia-afflicted cuties on your social media.

July 16 is World Snake Day. S-s-sounds like a s-s-sweet s-s-sales opportunity.

July 19 is Hot Dog Day. A perfect day for a barbecue and pet meetup event.

Aug. 8 is Odie DaY. Because not everybody’s favorite Garfield character is Garfield.

Aug. 17 is Black Cat Appreciation Day. Because these guys get such a bad rap.

Aug. 19 is International Homeless Animals Day. Promote local shelters, spaying, and share strategies for dealing with feral animals.

Aug. 30 is Holistic Pet Day. Celebrate … holistically.
